A few weeks ago, I received forwards from two well-meaning family members about the movie, Golden Compass, and its content. I responded with my own opinion about the books, which I have read.
I just read a very thoughtful post by Brandon Sanderson, an LDS writer of Fantasy fiction, dealing with the Golden Compass controversy. I thought it was so well done, that I am going to post a link to it. He certainly made his point far better than I could, so I will let you read it.
That is a great review and expresses how I feel as well. 🙂 Thanks for the link.
I’m glad you liked the review. I felt that the books were so complex that a simple condemnation or blanket statement of loving it weren’t enough. When I read the series, I felt like I was reading one man’s intense search for truth, and, dare I say it, search for God and meaning in life.
I read the first books to my sons, but will probably wait for the other two books until they are older. I am looking forward to the film. I think Nicole Kidman will make a fantastic Mrs. Coulter.
Thank you. I have been trying to get more information from people who have actually read the books. And I have been bothered about the tone of some of the e-mails and posts about this. I would love to hear more of what you thought as well. (Want to do another guest post?)
Yeah, I must admit that I’m NOT going to read the book or see the movie — not because of the so-called anti-religious tone, but because I just don’t get fantasy books at all. If there’s an elf or fairy or anything short and hairy (oh, I think I just described my husband) in it, my brain just shuts off (hey, I do that when my husband talks to me, too — I never got that connection before). I don’t know what it is. I just don’t like fantasy.
Lois, you are hilarious! No fairies and elfs in the books, but there are a few witches. Sometimes my brain shuts down when my husband talks to me as well.
Thank you for this post! I got that e-mail about 6 different times from 6 different people. He expressed his many good points so eloquently.
